Weather seems to be the winner these days when it comes to planning a trip.

I just returned from Sea Island, Ga., where we had three days of good weather and then the bottom fell out Wednesday, Feb. 27. We arrived on Sunday, Feb. 24 and had the privilege of playing one of the resort’s ultra-private courses, Ocean Forest.

Ocean Forest is a great course and hosted the Walker Cup a few years back. We basically had the course to ourselves in the morning due to the club having a member event in the afternoon. The weather was perfect. It was sunny and 70 degrees, with light winds. The course is somewhat tree-lined, with smaller greens. So the shot value into the green was at a premium.

The World Golf Championships Match Play tournament is underway, and there were some interesting matchups in the first round.

This tournament is comprised of the top 64 players on the world rankings list. Tiger Woods is No. 1 and Phil Mickelson is No. 2, but the rest of the players of the world are the ones to watch. These are players who are not household names, and you rarely get to see them. If you watch The Golf Channel at all, you might recognize some of them.

A few of the players to watch are guys like Martin Kaymer, Henrik Stenson, Richard Sterne and Niclas Fasth. These players are stalwarts on the European Tour and have a lot of game.

Weather hit the Midwest again this past week with some snow and frigid temperatures.

Meanwhile out in sunny, warm California, The Clambake was going on out at Pebble Beach, and everyone thought Phil Mickelson would win. He ended up missing the cut.

As always, the celebrities were showing off their games. But Bill Murray was missing, so the Pro-Am was a lot tamer this year than in the past.

Looking out the window here in Indy, we have some snow on the ground. That’s not bad for the course, but it just makes it seem like spring is so far away.

Now is a good time to visit your local golf shops and see if there are some good deals before the new styles and equipment arrive.

Congrats to the Giants. It was a popular win here in Indy, beating the Patriots!

Now that the Super Bowl is over, all golfers’ attention turns to the Super Bowl of golf, The Masters. Right now, four-time Masters winner Tiger Woods looks like the Patriots before the Super Bowl, undefeated so far in 2008.

I don’t know if anyone caught Tiger’s come-from-behind victory last weekend in Dubai, but it was amazing. Tiger admitted he did not have his best stuff on the weekend, but mentally he beat them on the back side of the final round.

During my last blog, I talked about putting and not making anything. Well, if you watch Tiger, he somehow wills crucial putts into the hole.

Tiger has such great mental strength, and working on that side of the game is something everyone can do during the offseason while waiting for golf weather.
