The race is over, and it’s back to golf here at the Brickyard.

It was great to see old friends come back to the Indianapolis 500 and also make new friends with the new set of drivers that have come over in the merger of the racing leagues.

Here is a short recap of the last week here at the Brickyard. First, The Rollie Golf Tournament presented by Tommy Bahama Rum on Wednesday, May 21 was a great time. We had good weather, a little windy, and a good time was had by all. Check out the pictures on our Web site. The tournament was won by Brad Benge, Bob Treash, Dan Rohn, Graham Cohen and NHRA Top Fuel driver Morgan Lucas.

I want to thank all the drivers and media personalities for participating this year and also thank the major sponsors: Tommy Bahama Rum, Tommy Bahama retail, Jug’s Catering, Coca-Cola, Miller Brewing, Kurt Earlywine and our good friend Larry Sinks of Joe-College.com.

The Indianapolis 500 on Sunday was fantastic, and the crowd here was one of the largest I have seen in a long time. Congratulations to Scott Dixon on an impressive drive for the 92nd Indianapolis 500 victory. Congratulations also to Glenn “Packy” Wheeler, a member here at the Brickyard Crossing who is also a spotter for Dixon.

Remember the Chicken Bone Open mention from the last blog? Back in the day when we had the inside nine-hole golf course, we used to park cars on the course on Race Day.

You can imagine what kind of a mess that left. We would find couches, grills, coolers and every once in a while an abandoned car. It would take most of the day to get the trash cleaned up off the course, but a few diehards still wanted to play that nine holes inside the track the day after the race. So we named Monday, the day after the race, Chicken Bone Open Day. You would tee off, and every time you got to your ball you would find and interesting lie. Sometimes on top of a “chicken bone,” hence the name.

Believe it or not, the PGA Tour played here back in the 60s, and they even had to deal with some of those interesting lies.

Our attention now turns to golf and events scheduled here at Brickyard Crossing. Our next event here is the Women’s City, which starts with qualifying June 9 and then match play will conclude on June 12.

Don’t forget: If you live here in Indy, the Brickyard now has a twilight rate of $55 that begins at 4 p.m. daily.
