The PGA Tour resumed last week without a Tiger, and some old names showed up on the leader board, with Stewart Cink winning the event.
If you remember, Tiger beat Cink in the match play tournament at the beginning of the year. So if things happen the way they should, we will have some new faces winning tournaments and some familiar names winning.
This week at the Buick Open, which was always a stop on Tiger’s schedule, a Hoosier is atop the leader board after two rounds. Bo Van Pelt, a Richmond Ind., native, is leading at 14-under par. Good luck to Bo over the weekend.
Here at the Brickyard, we are coming off a two-week stretch of decent weather and lots of events here. We have had a few celebrities here over the last couple weeks, helping out different charity events. Some of the participants have been Dallas Clark of the Indianapolis Colts, Danny Granger of the Indiana Pacers and coach Ron Hunter of IUPUI. Former Penn State football star Ki-Jana Carter also was in town and stopped by to play a round here at the Brickyard.
Last week I was in Chicago and got to play two great old golf courses in Lake Forest. The Children’s Memorial Hospital of Chicago has a fundraiser every year, and they invite club professionals from around the country to play.
On the first day, all the pros played at a Donald Ross course called Old Elm. Old Elm is a great old course that proves that courses do not need to 7,000-plus yards to be tough. It has great green settings and difficult, fast greens.
The next day was the Pro-Am, in which we get paired with four amateurs that are usually from the Chicago area who donate to the Children’s Memorial Hospital. The Pro-Am is played at a stately old golf course that is called Onwentsia. It still has the original clubhouse with very few updates. The course played host to the 1906 U.S. Open. The event raises more than $1 million a year for children’s healthcare at the hospital.
Just another reminder that the Brickyard is in great shape, and tee times can be made online at www.brickyardcrossing.com . Twilight golf here at the Brickyard has been a big hit, and the 4 p.m. tee times book immediately each day, so if you want to play the Brickyard after work make sure to book your tee time in advance.
