The Indiana Open concluded this week and unfortunately I did not make the cut. In my first round though I did achieve my goal which was to shoot 75 or better. I started off strong by making birdies on the 3rd and 5th holes to get to two-under-par but closed out the front nine with a bogey on Hole 9.
A side note to this round is the fact that our tee time was delayed over 2 hours. We did not tee off until 4pm and did not finish the round until 9 pm. Any way on the back nine I faltered and got a little tired and bogeyed three out of the last four holes to shoot 75.
The second round was a little different in that I did what I was trying not to do, and that is lose concentration and make big mistakes. I did just that and it resulted in two triple bogeys and a double bogey in route to an 81 to miss the cut by three shots. The painful thing about that round is that one of the triple bogeys I made was on my last hole to miss the cut.
Back here at the Brickyard we have had some nice events in the past week and are hosting a few upcoming events here in the next few weeks. One event that we had here this past week is the Bob and Tom Fuzzy Navel Classic. This event is a fundraiser for Riley Hospital for Children here in Indianapolis, and is one of the most popular charity tournaments here in Indy.
Each year Bob and Tom have their good friend and former U.S. Open and Masters Champion Fuzzy Zoeller come up and help host the event. Fuzzy does a clinic for the players before they tee off and he does an outstanding job of entertaining the participants.
After the clinic, he and Bob head on to the course and play a hole with each group and it is really enjoyable to see how Fuzzy entertains everyone and interacts with each group. Fuzzy truly is one of golf’s greatest ambassadors. After golf they have dinner and a live auction that benefits Riley.
On July 19th another unique event comes to the Brickyard, The Golf Channel’s “Drive, Chip and Putt” championship. This is a very special day in that junior golfers from surrounding areas, cities and states come to the Brickyard for a chance to qualify for the national finals held later in the summer. The event is free to all junior golfers ages 7-14.
Each junior participates in driving, chipping and putting. For more information on the Drive, Chip and Putt visit www.golfchannel.com .
We will keep you updated on things happening here in golf and talk a little about the British Open next week. Not sure who to pick this year due to Tiger’s injury, but I’ve got a feeling it might be a foreign player, maybe Sergio or Lee Westwood.
